The Buffalo River Trail Prairies, owned and maintained by the Wisconsin DNR and designated as a State Natural Area in 2002, offers prime habitat for fauna and flora viewing. This 153-acre gem was once an old railroad right-of-way along the meandering Buffalo River. It now harbors diverse stretches of prairie that were historically maintained by the unintentional fires sparked by passing railcars. Enjoy big and little bluestem, Indian grass, and showy forbs such as stiff goldenrod, prairie coreopsis, spiderwort, and flowering spurge.

The Buffalo River State Fishery Area encompasses 1,290 acres of land in Jackson and Trempeleau Counties. Wildlife includes ruffed grouse, waterfowl, deer, furbearers, and turkeys. Other recreational activities include trout fishing, berry picking and hiking.

Jackson County also offers nearly 200,000 acres of state and county public forestland for your personal enjoyment along with hundreds of miles of designated trails for hiking, biking, ATVing, snowmobiling, horseback riding, skiing and snowshoeing. Area lakes scatter the countryside with prime opportunities for trophy fishing, sand beach swimming and boating.
